| DESCRIPTION | We do not write or speak in individual sentences, but in the context of specific situations, texts and social discourses. This study-unit gives an introduction to three areas of linguistics that deal with linguistic utterances in their context: pragmatics, text linguistics and linguistic discourse analysis. Pragmatics considers linguistic utterances as actions: What do we do when we speak? What assumptions do we make? What do we have to state explicitly and what can we leave unsaid? How do we shape social relationships in communication? (Keywords: speech act theory, implication and implicature, politeness theory). Text linguistics asks, for example, what constitutes the formal and content-related cohesion of texts, what functions do they fulfill and what types of texts are there. (Keywords: cohesion, coherence, text functions and text types...) Linguistic discourse analysis is concerned with connections between texts and the role of linguistic elements in the negotiation of knowledge and power relations in a society. (Keywords: discourse, frame, interaction) Wenn wir schreiben oder sprechen, tun wir das nicht in einzelnen Sätzen, sondern im Kontext von bestimmten Situationen, Texten und gesellschaftlichen Diskursen. Das Seminar gibt eine Einführung in drei Teilgebiete der Sprachwissenschaft, die sich mit sprachlichen Äußerungen in ihrem Kontext beschäftigen: die Pragmatik, die Textlinguistik und die linguistische Diskursanalyse. Die Pragmatik betrachtet sprachliche Äußerungen als Handlungen: Was tun wir, wenn wir sprechen? Welche Voraussetzungen machen wir dabei? Was müssen wir explizit sagen, was können wir ungesagt lassen? Wie gestalten wir soziale Beziehungen in der Kommunikation? (Themen: Sprechakttheorie, Implikation und Implikatur, Höflichkeitstheorie) Die Textlinguistik fragt z.B., was den formalen und inhaltlichen Zusammenhalt von Texten ausmacht, welche Funktionen sie erfüllen und was für Arten von Texten es gibt. (Themen: Kohäsion, Kohärenz, Textfunktionen und Textsorten…) In der linguistischen Diskursanalyse geht es um Zusammenhänge zwischen Texten und die Rolle sprachlicher Elemente bei der Aushandlung von Wissen und Machtverhältnissen in einer Gesellschaft. (Themen: Diskurs, Frame, Interaktion) Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to provide students with the conceptual tools to study written and oral texts in context by applying the theoretical framework of linguistics. It aims to further their skills in describing and analysing the functions and structures of texts and identify the characteristic features of different types of text. In this way, students will acquire transferable analytic tools to improve their understanding of literary and non-literary texts and their critical reading skills. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - explain the core ideas of pragmatics, text linguistics and linguistic discourse analysis; - understand and classify various types of texts. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - apply analytical tools from pragmatics, text linguistics and linguistic discourse analysis to different types of texts; - discuss the advantages and problems associated with different approaches; - demonstrate an improved awareness of textual strategies and a capacity to evaluate them in different linguistic and social contexts. |
